Equipment: When I was a skater, I used to skate on Bonts with Sure-Grip Avenger Magnesium Plates w/ DA 45 trucks, 33 degree hollow kingpin *swoon*. They’re the only skates that fit that aren’t juniors. I have tiny feet. I still love recreational skating.
In the land of derby ninjas (aka, the NSOs), I have this awesome yoga-pant material dress that I NSO in. It’s super comfortable and kind of unique.
Story behind your derby name and number: Back in the day when I was a raver, Mandaryn was my raver-name, as bestowed upon me by some random kid who misheard my nickname of Manders. I felt like it needed to be re-invented once I started derby, so I added a fierce sounding verb to the end. Turns out that “crush” is less fierce and more a personality trait.
As for the number 25. Lots of cool things happen on the 25 in various months. It’s an awesome number, and it’s the square of a prime number.
Love: The community. I love that it’s inclusive to all body types and all genders.
Love less: The community. There are still some folks out there (just like in life) who can’t get on board with all-gender derby. This makes me a sad Crush.
Derby mantra: I’m cheering on the inside.
Derby hero: My friend Dragon Harass. She’s the head NSO for the Chicago Bruise Brothers and an awesome NSO for the Dupage Derby Dames. She was a skater for a bit, broke her ankle, fought hard came back, was rostered for a season, then recently broke her other ankle. While she’s done skating, she’s not done with derby and she’s just super admirable.
